Simple Salt-free Marinara Sauce

It seems almost impossible to find prepared marinara sauce that is both oil-free and salt-free, even if you're willing to spend outrageous sums of money for it. Invariably I make my own, and it's so easy! With just a few pantry staples you can have a healthy pasta sauce ready to use in less than an hour.

Equipment

  • 1 3- or 4-quart saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 large cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 (28-oz) cans no-salt-added crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons dried basil OR salt-free Italian seasoning blend
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add water and garlic. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring frequently, or until fragrant. Stir in the tomatoes, basil or Italian seasoning, oregano, crushed red pepper, and maple syrup.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer over low heat. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a little bit of water if you find the sauce is getting too thick.
  3. Serve, or, if not using some or all of the sauce just yet, store cooled leftover sauce in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Can also be frozen.
