
Simple Salt-free Marinara Sauce
It seems almost impossible to find prepared marinara sauce that is both oil-free and salt-free, even if you're willing to spend outrageous sums of money for it. Invariably I make my own, and it's so easy! With just a few pantry staples you can have a healthy pasta sauce ready to use in less than an hour.
Equipment
- 1 3- or 4-quart saucepan
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 large cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
- 2 (28-oz) cans no-salt-added crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons dried basil OR salt-free Italian seasoning blend
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Instructions
- Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add water and garlic. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring frequently, or until fragrant. Stir in the tomatoes, basil or Italian seasoning, oregano, crushed red pepper, and maple syrup.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer over low heat. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a little bit of water if you find the sauce is getting too thick.
- Serve, or, if not using some or all of the sauce just yet, store cooled leftover sauce in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Can also be frozen.
